Millennium Park:
Zaha Hadid Pavilion

The second of two pavilions created for the Daniel Burnham Centennial in Chicago’s Millennium Park was designed by London architect Zaha Hadid. Wirelessly controlled fixtures were mounted to surrounding streetlights as well as the interior fabric of the installation. The lighting is synchronized with a seven minute film, produced by the Gray Circle, which is projected on the interior wall. At the base of the pavilion is a subtle string of light that creates a vivid, ethereal effect in which the structure seems to float slightly off the ground.

In lighting both pavilions, Dear wanted to keep Burnham’s passion for innovation in mind. To that end, Dear decided that all of the lighting for the project would use environmentally sustainable LEDs, or Light Emitting Diodes. The finished product is a visually spectacular display with design features that coalesce brilliantly with the surfaces, textures, and unique elements of each sculpture.
